Year End Wrap Up from Thread Head

After a month of blogging every day I took a bit of a break from the computer. I didn't think it would last 4 months, but it did.
I have realized that cleaning and cooking have become my hobbies that I devote most of my time to these days (everything is better when it is considered a hobby).
I have finished a few different things over the past few months though.

Knitting -
A hat from a local raw fleece that I had cleaned, combed, spun, then dyed with indigo a few years ago. This is the second hat that ...

CHRISTMAS PLAIDISH QUILT from Kwilty Pleasures

My Christmas Plaidish quilt has been a project for 2021.
I just finished it... in time for Christmas!
The Plaidish pattern is by Erica Jackman
at Kitchen Table Quilting.

Sew it began after I finished my first Plaidish
and I selected red, green and white holiday prints.

Because Plaidish has scraps sorted into 3 volumes of color
that read as Low, Medium and Dark
I sorted lots of holiday prints that read...
Red as Dark Volume
Green as Medium Volume
White as Low Volume

This is the flimsy top
567 pieces and 63 blocks.

CHEROKEE MYSTERY FINISH! from Kwilty Pleasures

Columbus Modern Quilt Guilds
Mystery Quilt Challenge for 2019!

Every other month we received a clue or instructions on how to
finish a unit of the mystery quilt.

Once I had the top completed my good friend Betty
quilted it for me on her Statler Gamill Machine.

My hubby thought this looked like an Indian Blanket design.
Betty used a Fire Flame for the E2E quilting.
I have 2 great-great grandmothers who were Cherokee Indians.
It was a Mystery Quilt design.

Therefore...

I finally got outside to get a few pics.

HO HO HO-LD ON! from Kwilty Pleasures

Yes, its' been a SWELL time making my
Vintage Santa Quilt top.
I am always late to the sewing party, as
this design came out a couple years ago.
I don't care....it's timeless.

As always, I began with cutting and labeling.
I decided to use a dark charcoal gray fabric
for the background.

Sewing the HO HO HO letters was fun and quick.
Labels help!

My H Letters all in a Row!

Here you can see the dark charcoal gray background.
I love all these vintage inspired prints.

The O letters were soon finished.

Then the HO ...

CHARLEY HARPER DREAMS from Kwilty Pleasures

Seems like a long time ago...
I found a love of Charley Harper fabrics.
I kept collecting them, and made a few smaller projects.
All became part of my guest bedroom.

Then I collected more...and found a pattern I thought
could work for a king size quilt, for the queen size bed.

I cut a lot of blocks and worked on them at intervals.
I didn't like the pattern churn dash corners...
so I just made regular Churn Dash blocks.

Fussy cut centers of many Charley Harper fabrics.

I made 36, 16" Churn Dash blocks
White GRUNGE framed ...

TESTING!!! TESTING!!! from Kwilty Pleasures

Recently I was interviewed to become a pattern tester for
The Frannie B Quilt Company.
Two rounds of survey questions and I was in!

Corinne Wells is the owner and
has a staff of excellent artists and designers.
Riley Blake is one of her fabric sponsors.
Corrine also has released her own fabric designs.

Like this Rocky Mountain Wild
for Riley Blake

Their mission is to take vintage patterns and fabrics
and give them a Modern feel.

Just perfect for me!

First up…I did a read only test!
Corrine said I provided excellent feedback
on the written pattern!

GHASTLIES IN THE GARDEN from Kwilty Pleasures

I love a good pumpkin quilt.
HOCUS POCUS by The Pattern Basket
ended up in my sewing room.

Well Pumpkins are still around in November!
Sew take a peek!

I pulled fabrics and began to read the pattern.
I was quite disappointed to learn the instructions had
you cut and make one block at at time.

I don't always follow rules...I don't like rules.
Sew I cut the block pieces,
but did not sew them.
Sew many tiny pieces....I am not happy!
I put it away for awhile.

I had an idea, since I first saw ...

ANGLIEE'S HARPERS from Kwilty Pleasures

Angilee Berry was a lady who lived in Indiana. I live in Ohio.
What were the chances we would ever meet, much less, become friends.

In 2019 I put together a Holiday Sew Day for local quilters.
It was there I found this wonderful lady sitting across from me
at her sewing machine.

She was a friend of some quilty friends and because she was a quilter,
they invited her to join in the fun!
We became friends that day and our journey continued on FB sharing
quilts, fabric choices and a love for Charley Harper fabrics.

But that day ...

Christmas 2021 Plaidish WIP from Kwilty Pleasures

I apparently love plaid and Christmas.
Therefore a Plaidish Christmas quilt landed on my sewing table.

I can never seem to get my fill of Christmas quilts.
I have a few on my radar for this Christmas.

I loved the Plaidish quilt pattern by Erica Jackman
@kitchentable quilting.

Wouldn't it be great in Christmas colors!?!
I decided Reds for Dark Value, Greens for Mid Value
and Whites for Light Value.

If you recall...I made one Plaidish quilt about a year ago
using scraps from my stash of hundreds.

I got it all cut and it sat for a ...

SWELL from Kwilty Pleasures

I am always  behind the trending fabrics and designs
SWELL …this is no different.

I saw this quilt a couple years ago and loved it.
BUT I didn’t buy any of the Moda SWELL fabric!

It didn’t take long to gather some prints.  A few friends gave me some of their stash.
I also found a few pieces on-line and at LQS.

Jingle Jangle was the original pattern for this quilt.

I saw lots of variations for this amazing Vintage Santa!
and became confused as to what design I liked the best.

Log Cabin

DASHING ALONG from Kwilty Pleasures

I will begin by saying...
I seldom get involved with Sew Alongs Challenges

BUT when Kairlie Oaks showed up
on Instagram with the #dashalong
I couldn't resist.

Use 1 precut layer cake
Some backing
and make Churn Dash Blocks.

WIN-WIN-WIN

I had a very old Wrens and Friends layer cake by MODA

And plenty of white in my stash for the background.

The stacks were ready and the chain piecing was easy and fast.

The colors in this layer cake are sew fun and happy!

Then came the HST...this took the most time!

Ahhh, yes....sew pretty!

BAKING BOAS from Kwilty Pleasures

Have you seen the trendy BAKING BOAS?
I received this one for Christmas last year
from my partner in crimes of fabric, yarn, travel and wine.
Kathy Guenther!
She also knows I am a Christmas Baking fool.

I just love it!
She found this one at Lehman’s in Oho Amish Country.

Many specialty / botique type stores carry these in many themes.
Calahans in Calabash, NC had these Nautical BOAs
The store BOAs are made of the thinner, flatter cotton towels and
it looks like they have 2 towels per BOA.
Retail costs between $20-$25

I knew I could ...

FLYING GEESE ? from Kwilty Pleasures

I am a pattern tester for Erica Jackman, Kitchen Table Quilting.
She sent out a call for testers on a new pattern that will drop mid-June

I was intrigued by the white diamonds in this design.
How the heck did that happen?

I accepted the challenge to test this pattern with this fabric pull.
I love using my stash for pattern tests.

I cut out the pieces using various FQs from my stash.
What I cut from my fabric and what the pattern says to cut from the fabric
selections she uses...may vary just a bit....it all comes ...

BACK PAIN from Kwilty Pleasures

I have back pain...its not fun.
It can range from the arthritis to disk degeneration to a
a muscle hitting a sciatica nerve.
Sometime one or the other, sometimes all at once.

However, there is a back pain in quilting that is NOT physical
but mental and it involves fabric.
I like to piece the backings for my modern quilts.
Sometimes it is painful.

This is my Beachy Showers Quilt
and this is the process I used to make the backing...
using only fabrics I had in my stash.

I hang the quilt top on my design wall to ...

WHERE BEACHY SHOWERS HAPPEN from Kwilty Pleasures

When I am at the beach...
I make quilts.

When it rains at the beach...
I make quilts

The fabric in this quilt is called
April Showers

I named this quilt, Beachy Showers
for all those reasons.
And the first picture is a photo op
at the Beach Showers...how cool is that!

CHARITY SEWING 2021 from Kwilty Pleasures

I kicked off 2021 by sewing lots of quilts tops from my stash.
2020 gave me lots of time to rethink where and how
I will spend my volunteer time in 2021!
The Stitching Sisters is a local Columbus OH group that
I have been involved with, on and off, for many, many years.
My best friend who fought breast cancer in 2020 (now in remission)
received one of their quilts.  I decided it was time for me to
get back and give back to them.
You can read about the Stitching Sister's efforts here.

I had lots of ...

Another Sewcial Distance Quilt top project is done!
This time 3 of us are sewing apart/together!

I am wintering at Ocean Isle Beach, NC
Kim is located in Pickerington, OH
Shirley is located in Evansville, IN

I love me some Kate and Birdie fabrics.
I had this 'Wonder' line and some background in my stash.
I am making a baby quilt.

Kim is busting her Bonnie & Camille stash.
She pulled 3 charm packs of  ‘Little Snippets’ line for a lap size quilt.

And my friend Shirley decided to join the fun.
She cut 5” squares from her stash to ...

CHARLEY HARPER REMAKE from Kwilty Pleasures

Several years ago I received this bag in a swap.
I loved it, but it was kinda floppy.
It needed stabilizer to make it sturdy.

Today I decided I would remake it into a bag
that I would use.  It was to to sit in a shelf.
it’s a Charley Harper bag...after all!

Sew I assessed the original design
And though about what I would remake with the pieces!
I had to make sure the appliqué Chickadee remained where it is.

I decided I could rework into a One Hour Basket.
Sew I cut the handles off,
Cut ...

Lots of Weaving from Thread Head

This past week has been about weaving.

I finished my first card weaving piece. This was really easy, and enjoyable to weave.

I ended up with about 1.5m of braid. It is made from 8/2 unmercerized cotton in 4 colours.

The design is created by turning all the cards at a time. The top design is turning the cards 4 times one way and then 4 times the other way while weaving. The bottom design is 8 times each way. I believe this type of design is called a threaded in design. There are many other ways to ...
